Salinity thresholds for understory plants in coastal wetlands

چکیده
The effects of sea level rise and coastal saltwater intrusion on wetland plants can extend well above the high-tide line due to drought, hurricanes, groundwater intrusion. Research has examined how salt marsh plant communities respond increased flooding salinity, but more inland systems have received less attention. aim this study was identify whether ground layer exhibit threshold responses salinity exposure. We used two vegetation surveys throughout Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula (APP) North Carolina, USA assess in a low elevation landscape (≤ 3.8 m) experiencing high rates (3–4 mm/year). primary drivers community composition change using Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) Threshold Indicator Taxa Analysis (TITAN) detect thresholds compositional based indicator taxa, response potential indicators exposure (Na, Σ Ca + Mg) elevation. Salinity explained 64% variation composition, we found for both soil Na+ (265 3843 g Na+/g) Ca+ Mg+ (42 126 µeq/g) where major changes occur APP. Similar sets species showed sensitivity these different metrics Overall, our results that be as reliable wetlands. These monitoring ecosystems identifying areas at risk undergoing future shifts.

متن کاملPreliminary Evaluation of Critical Wave Energy Thresholds at Natural and Created Coastal Wetlands
PURPOSE: This technical note presents an evaluation of the wave climate at eight natural and created coastal wetland sites in an effort to identify the existence of critical wave energy thresholds for long-term marsh stability. This information could be used to help determine the minimum degree of protective structures necessary for successful establishment of created or restored coastal wetlan...

Moist and temperate Caspian forests are associated with a diversity of soil types and topography. Although, natural history and ecological attributes of the Caspian vegetation is well-documented, little is known about mycorrhizae of the Caspian (Hyrcanian) flora. Samples of herbaceous plant species were collected from 4 pre-determined altitudes (-13 upto about 1500m above sea level, appro...
متن کاملIncorporating thresholds into understanding salinity tolerance: A study using salt‐tolerant plants in salt marshes
Although salinity in many ecosystems such as salt marshes can be extremely high, an asymmetry in salinity range between experimental studies (relatively narrow) and field conditions (potentially broad) has strongly affected current understanding of plant salinity tolerance. To improve understanding, it is thus important to examine plant tolerances over a broad range of salinities and identify p...
